La Cala South
Located at the La Cala Resort, Mijas Costa, this 18 hole, 5925m long par 72 course, designed by Cabell. B. Robinson was opened in 1991. It is also known as Campo Asia and is a slightly shorter and tighter course than its neighbour La Cala North. It is one of the first golf courses to be built away from the coast and it boasts spectacular mountain views.
Although the fairways are wide and the greens offer quite generous landing areas, approximately half of the tee shots must be landed with careful precision and knowledgeable skilled club use as many of the Pancross grass greens which are well defended by bunkers and the occasional water hazard also have the added twist of being elevated. To keep players on their toes, some of the tee shots also run downhill.
Many of these plateaued greens are surrounded by thick roughs which do not allow too much room for inaccuracy. There is excellent variety over the short holes and all the longer drives are reachable. The spectacular sloping terrain poses a challenge to player’s tactics and skill level and this course is not recommended for beginners.
The “cortijo” style Clubhouse of the La Cala Resort has a restaurant that provides breakfasts, lunches and evening meals from either the air conditioned lounge or the ample terrace overlooking the 18th hole of Campo Asia. There are luxurious, spacious changing rooms with individual power showers and saunas...perfect for real relaxation after your game and the complex also has squash courts and a gym for those who really like to work out! The resort also has a grass driving range, a high tech putting studio with video facilities, an intricate 6 hole par 3 course perfect for beginners and short game practice.
