Marbella Golf and Country Club
Just 5 minutes drive from the glamorous town of Marbella and 20km from Fuengirola, is the Marbella Golf and Country Club, an 18 hole championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr. and opened in 1994. It carries Trent's trademark sweeping fairways, abundant bunkers and large undulating greens.
The initial tees require accurate and brave tee offs to get over the ravines and gullies. The first hole is a short, raised, well protected green with a fast downhill pace. The second is a dogleg left, par 5, with cork trees to negotiate. There is an urge to take risks at the 4th, but players are well advised to play it safe over the olives with a wedge.
Deep bunkers in the olive groves at the 8th can also provide a challenge. Although the second half of holes are somewhat easier on the nerves, beware the 11th, a sharp dog leg right with hills and valleys and get don't forget your camera for the best views around the 12th. Framed by a lake, the 13th is a long par 5. A helpful hint at the 15th is to aim for the hospital in the distance.
The course really compliments its surrounding environment especially on the second half where several lakes feature. Elegantly designed villas and apartments are being constructed in discrete pueblo style urbanizations around the course and the exquisite gardens surrounding the Clubhouse and restaurant lead the eye over the sunny terrace to the Mediterranean Sea.
Facilities include putting and pitching greens, driving range, professional tuition, tennis courts, gym, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room and large well equipped Pro Shop. Clubs, buggies and hand carts can all be rented and the Club remains open all year round.
